Hollywood star of Lebanese origin Salma Hayek is set to visit Lebanon at the end of this week, from the 24th until the 28th of April, in order to launch her new animated film “The Prophet” based on renowned Lebanese author Gibran Khalil Gibran’s novel.
In this regard, many rumors and speculations emerged regarding the actress’ Lebanese origins, with many saying that her roots may be traced to the northern town of Ehden, since it is scheduled on her agenda.
The Mayor of Baabdat in the district of Metn, Nabil Salhab, however begs to differ. Speaking to the state-run National News Agency, he said that like many families who are now residents of the town, Hayek's ancestors would have fled the North, namely the towns of Bkerkasha and Ehden, taking refuge in Baabdat.
The mayor goes on to explain that Sami, the actress' father, was born in Baabdat in 1937, according to the civil registry, adding that her grandfather, Gerges Hayek, built a house in Baabdat in 1888 before leaving the town.
“The house was transformed into a Protestants Center in 1892, and later a residence for the Capuchin Fathers,” he said.
