Cardinal Rai says no one accepts longstanding power vacuum

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros al-Rai reiterated Monday his call for the election of a new Lebanese president, saying “no one should accept that the [power] vacuum last for over a year”.

“We continue to pray for the election of a president and for reconciliation,” Cardinal Rai said at the opening of the synod of Maronite Bishops in Bkerke, warning that vacuum is leading to the disintegration of constitutional institutions.

“The Church is working on preserving its people,” Rai added.

Lebanon officially entered presidential vacuum last year on May 25 after the six-year term of former President Michel Sleiman expired.

Lawmakers have repeatedly failed to choose a successor to the head of state. The impasse highlights the stark political divisions in the country.

Lebanon's presidency, allocated to the Maronite Christian community under Lebanon's sectarian division of power, is one of the three main political offices alongside the Prime Minister - a Sunni Muslim - and parliamentary speaker - a Shi'ite.
