Activist Tarek Mallah, 3 others to stand trial on Aug. 4

Lebanese activist Tarek Mallah, along with three others, is due to stand trial on the 4th of August, a date set Thursday by the State Prosecutor for Appeals, Judge Ziad Haidar who filed a lawsuit against them on defamation charges.

General Prosecutor Judge Samir Hammoud had referred Mallah, and the three other activists, to Judge Haidar after the Internal Security Forces’ Information Bureau handed them over.

Meanwhile, a number of civil society activists held a sit-in outside the Grand Serail to protest the detentions, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Activist and whistleblower Tarek Mallah and 3 others were arrested Tuesday after blocking the road and allegedly assaulting the vehicle of Social Affairs Minister Rachid Derbass.

Civil society activists have launched a campaign against the Lebanese government and officials who have failed to resolve the pressing waste issue, in a sustainable, eco-friendly manner, blocking various roads in Beirut.

Lebanon has been grappling with a waste crisis following the July 17 closure of the Naameh landfill. The cabinet pledged last year that the said landfill would be shut down and an alternative site would be found, however failed to live up to its promises.
