MP Jumblatt says Beirut Municipality spending capital’s funds without clear plan or vision
Head of the Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblatt commented on a report published by al-Akhbar newspaper, pertaining to on demand purchase of real estate by Beirut Municipality, saying "if this claim turns out to be true, then it indicates that Beirut Municipality is only interested in stimulating the real estate sector and trade at the expense of the capital’s heritage."

“We have been calling on the said municipality to acquire the ancient buildings in a bid to protect them and prevent their demolition and replacement with skyscrapers,” he stated.

In his weekly statement to al-Anbaa website, Jumblatt noted that the municipality has been spending the capital’s funds "without having a clear plan or an integrated vision as a basis for the projects."

In this context, he added that the prolonged delay in preserving heritage buildings in Beirut has led to the practical distortion of the city’s image, consequently transforming its old streets and neighborhoods into “blocks of cement and concrete.”

Jumblatt hoped that the authorities would grant this issue the necessary attention, "instead of being distracted with meaningless files that do not help the capital or its residents."
