Future bloc MP Ammar Houry said on Wednesday that resorting to the streets is “a democratic right, so long as it remains peaceful," in reference to the demonstrations to be held today by Free Patriotic Movement supporters. “I hope that the Free Patriotic Movement’s protest demands the election of a new president,” he added. Houry’s comments were made during a phone call with LBCI's Nharkom Said TV show whereby he noted that the FPM is a component of the current cabinet, urging it to reconsider its stances. On Tuesday, FPM leader MP Michel Aoun called on his supporters to take to the streets today (Wednesday) to protest what he said was the government's marginalization of the Christian community's rights. "Nothing will stop us from reaching our goals, and everyone is invited to demonstrate," Aoun added. As for the initiative suggested by General Security head Major General Abbas Ibrahim to raise the retirement age of top security officers, Houry stressed that such a suggestion is far from being achieved. On Monday, General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim stressed that his proposal to modify the defense law to raise the retirement ages of top security officers was an all-inclusive suggestion that would not disturb the state's treasury nor the Lebanese army's hierarchy.
He added that raising the retirement age was crucial and carefully considered, saying the suggestion to modify the defense law was "comprehensive."
Parliament hasn't held any legislative session since it voted to extend its mandate by more than two and a half years on November 5, 2014.
