Employees’ Union at the Port of Beirut praised on Friday the success that followed the warning issued by the workers of the port. It said that workers and employees proved their solidarity and their will to support their union that continued to defend their rights and interests far from political polarities.
The union reiterated that it would carry the momentum forward until the decision to use a nearby estate as a garbage dump was revoked.
It also declared its intention to contact labor unions, and civil and environmental associations in order to coordinate the means to tackle "these destructive projects".
The union will also contact international labor organizations responsible for shipping, to explain the fact that the port is going through ‘scandalous’ violations.
It clarified that the strike is open in order to stop the implementation of any suspicious projects.
Employees of Beirut port suspended work on Thursday morning to protest against the possibility of transporting waste to the port.
In this context, the Head of the Employees' Union at the Port of Beirut Beshara Asmar told LBCI that they will "not accept the transformation of the port into a garbage dumping point," calling for dialogue aimed at tackling the removal of the waste that had already been transported to the facility.
