Foreign Minister Bassil: Waste management crisis is being exploited politically

Change and Reform bloc said on Tuesday that the waste management crisis is being exploited politically.

“The crisis is being “exploited politically” with the aim of pressuring the Free Patriotic Movement,” Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said after the bloc's weekly meeting.

He also noted that developing Akkar to exploit it in the waste management issue is an attempt to “underestimate people's intelligence.”

On another note, Bassil said that normal decrees require the signatures of the 24 ministers or all the ministerial blocs amid the presidential vacuum, adding that the bloc won't accept the usurpation of the president's last remaining jurisdiction.”

During an extraordinary cabinet session earlier in the day, the ministers canceled the results of the waste management tenders and returned the file to the concerned ministerial committee, amid the withdrawal of Hezbollah, Change and Reform bloc and Tachnag ministers from the session.

The cabinet also declared that 100 million dollars will be allocated to Akkar district to set up developmental projects.

At the onset of the session, PM Salam ordered the removal of a concrete wall that was set-up on Monday to separate the Grand Serail from Riad al-Soleh Square in the wake of violent protests that erupted on Sunday.
