Change and Reform bloc leader MP Aoun calls for a demonstration next Friday
Change and Reform bloc Chief MP Michel Aoun reiterated on Friday his call for the election of a new president "by the people", voicing his support to protests taking place in downtown Beirut.

During a press conference held at his residence in Rabieh, Aoun also called on supporters of his Free Patriotic Movement to carry out protests next Friday “to ask for reforms.”

Aoun noted that legitimacy is given to the authorities by the people, adding that “no ruler can be legitimate if the people don't recognize his legitimacy.”

Aoun reiterated his call for the election of a president straight by the people, calling for the drafting of an electoral law based on proportional representation.

Aoun also urged friendly countries not to interfere in Lebanon's internal issues by backing leaders whom he says have lost their legitimacy.

Anti-government protests have turned violent after several movements turned a waste management crisis, which emerged last month, into a popular uprising against the political leaders that dominated Lebanon since its civil war ended in 1990.

The “You Stink” movement is holding another protest in downtown Beirut on Saturday, but Aoun stressed that his supporters would not participate in the protest.
