Akkar’s civil society activists voice rejection to receiving garbage from Beirut and other regions
Akkar’s civil society activists held a meeting on Sunday in the Menyara town, with talks featuring high on the cabinet’s insistence to send Beirut’s garbage to Akkar.
 
The activists issued a statement whereby they reiterated that “they reject to bury waste coming from Beirut and other regions in Akkar.”
 
They urged the cabinet to end procrastination in resolving the alarming garbage crisis and to find a radical solution to Akkar’s random dumps.
 
Lebanon has been grappling with a waste crisis following the July 17 closure of the Naameh landfill.
 
The cabinet pledged last year that the said landfill would be shut down and an alternative site would be found, however failed to live up to its promises.
 
The piles of garbage rotting in the summer heat triggered nationwide outrage and serious health warnings.
 
Following the closure of the landfill, civil society activists have been staging protests that grew into a popular uprising against the political class that has dominated the country since its civil war ended in 1990.
