Rai’s visit to France seen as beneficial to Lebanon
Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai described on Saturday his visit to France as historical, adding that France’s relationship with the Maronites in Lebanon serves both the Christians and the whole country.

“There are historical dimensions to this visit given the friendship between Lebanon and France, which we have preserved,” Rai told reporters at the Rafik Hariri International Airport before departing for his scheduled trip to Paris.

“The relationship between France and the Maronites does not only serve the Maronites but it serves Lebanon as a whole.” Rai, whose visit is his first official one to France since his election earlier this year, is expected to meet French President Nicolas Sarkozy and discuss current developments in the region and their effect on Lebanon during a 45-minute meeting.

Asked about Future Movement MP Khaled Daher’s recent comments that the army’s intelligence arm is biased, Rai said the army is the backbone of the country and urged lawmakers to respect governmental institutions.
