Jumblatt fears a “bidding frenzy” at each governmental juncture

As-Safir daily quoted the National Struggle Front Leader MP Walid Jumblatt Monday as saying that the cabinet should take its time when dealing with various matters from appointments to economic issues”, voicing fear over a “bidding frenzy” similar to that sparked by the electricity plan.

Jumblatt said “Prime Minister Najib Mikati is doing a good job and running the cabinet properly”, highlighting the importance of stemming the blackmailing tactic which is, according to him, putting a spoke in the wheel.

Jumblatt made sure to convey a frank message to the “concerned parties”, calling on them not to risk defaulting on Lebanon’s international commitment to the STL or prevent its funding.   “By honoring our commitments, Lebanon will be spared from the possibility of international sanctions.”

In regard to the debate surrounding electoral law reform, Jumblatt said that proportional representation is completely out of the question for him. The National Struggle Front leader said he opposes elections based on proportional representation not out of self-interest, as some have said, but because the proposed system seems complicated and ambiguous to him.

On the situation in Syria, Jumblatt said that the Syrian people have been stirring the uprising in order to see their reform demands met, adding “as for the Syrian leadership, the situation spun out of control after they missed a great opportunity by turning down the Arab League initiative.”
