Jumblatt calls on Rai to liquidate Church assets, protect lands

The Head of the National Struggle Front MP Walid Jumblatt said that Lebanon should be spared the scandal of wikileaks that recently affected Speaker Nabih Berri, since it harms the national dialogue amongst different Lebanese parties.

Jumblatt praised Berri’s achievement for convening a national dialogue at the peak of the 2006 internal crisis. In his weekly column in Al-Anbaa newspaper, Jumblatt said that the best way to deal with the issue of Palestinian resettlement is through improving the temporary accommodations of the Palestinian refugees.

Jumblatt urged Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai, a veteran clergyman entrusted with the Christian presence in Lebanon and in the Middle East, to establish a committee of wealthy Christians to halt the sale of Christian lands.

“Remarks regarding the rise of Salafist and extremist movements are inaccurate and only aim at inciting fear”, Jumblatt wrote, making clear that popular demands are interconnected and cannot be divided.

Jumblatt warned against reports encouraging alliances between minorities, which led in the past to Lebanon’s demise.
