Introduction to the evening news 15-07-2012

Koura’s by-elections were apparently to the satisfaction of Interior Minister Marwan Charbel given that they involved a “low-dose” of politics, tight security measures and continued TV appearances.
The electoral day passed with no security problems or flagrant violations while the voter turnout was similar to that of the 2009 elections.

Pending the results that will soon be disclosed, all eyes are turned to frontrunners Fadi Karam and Walid al-Azar as well as the fluctuating difference in the number of votes for each candidate.

As for the Syrian events, the Syrian foreign ministry denied U.N. claims that government forces used heavy weapons during a military operation that left scores dead and brought immediate international condemnation.

Meanwhile, U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan will seek President Vladimir Putin's help in ending the conflict in Syria during a visit to Moscow starting on Monday, with pressure mounting on Russia to stop propping up Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.
