March 14 condemns Lebanese authorities’ support of Syrian regime

March 14 General Secretariat said Wednesday that it rejects any attempt to delay the payment of Lebanon’s contribution to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) probing the assassination of late PM Rakik Hariri and his companions.

The General Secretariat also called on the Lebanese cabinet to settle the funding issue “away from political and media maneuvers aiming at playing for time and hindering the cabinet’s work.”

The General Secretariat voiced satisfaction, following its weekly meeting, with the STL work and the procedures it is undertaking to kick off trials. Pre-Trial Judge, Daniel Fransen, has recently ruled that victims' applications to participate in the trial relating to the attack of 14 February 2005 should, barring exceptional circumstances, be filed before 31 October 2011.

The General Secretariat decried the Lebanese authorities’ repeated attempts to support the Syrian regime and to take Assad’s side in the Arab and international forums.

The General Secretariat also reiterated its support to the Syrian people and to their demands for freedom, democracy and dignity, calling on the Lebanese, Arab and international communities to stand in solidarity with the Syrians in all possible means.

March 14 General Secretariat added that “it is important for the Arab and international communities to take practical measures to free the Syrian people from Assad’s regime that adopts a policy of repression and violence.
