Heated debates in parliament over electricity issue

The Head of the Administration and Justice Committee MP Robert Ghanem adjourned on Thursday the session for joint parliamentary committees dedicated to look into the electricity plan.

The session will resume on Monday giving Energy Minister Gebran Bassil the time to answer the questions posed by different Members of Parliament.

The session saw heated debates and the first to take the floor was MP Fouad Siniora who spoke for 40 minutes, sparking the ire of the majority’s MPs and pushing MP Ali Ammar to make a sarcastic comment by saying: “Siniora cannot act as if he were the king of the world.”

MP Ahmad Fatfat called on all members to restrict the parliamentary discussions to the content [of the electricity bill] rather than its political aspect. When eighteen MPs took the floor without suggesting any amendments to the electricity bill, March 14 MPs began leaving the hall, prompting MP Ghanem to adjourn the session.

Sources told LBC TV station that Monday’s session will be decisive.
