Protests over Mohammad Iskandar's 'offensive' songs reach Canada

Mohammad Iskandar, a name associated with popular catchy songs on one hand, and unacceptable sexism on the other.     

However, this Lebanese singer who came back to the spotlight after long absence, is now facing a new problem, this time from Montreal, Canada.        

The problem began when some Lebanese and Arab rights groups in Montreal called for boycotting his concerts at the beginning of next month due to his songs that are, according to them, “offensive to both women and homosexuals”.      

This campaign takes us two years back when women’s groups protested against his song “Jouhouriyet Albi” (The Republic of my Heart) that turned women from an equal citizen to men to merely a “horma” subject to men’s mood swings and needs.        

To contradict all those who thought he had reached his peak, Mohammad Iskandar returned in 2012 with a new song called “Dodd el ‘Enf” (Against Violence) that is full of sexist ideas and violence against women, children and homosexuals.       

Mohammad Iskandar’s concerts in Canada will most probably be held and attended by Lebanese and Arabs, but voices will definitely be raised against Iskandar’s sexism and offensive songs.
