Mystery shrouds the murder of Monk Elie Makdessi
The circumstances of the murder of Lebanese Maronite monk Elie Makdessi remain in the dark. Makdessi’s body was found on Saturday afternoon off Khaldeh - al-Nahmeh shore.

Father Makdessi had left the St Mikhael Monastery in Bekfaya on Friday evening to visit his parents in Sid al-Bauchrieh never to return. The monastery’s officials informed security forces of his disappearance, only to be notified later that an unidentified body was found. One of the monastery’s priests was sent to the scene to identify the corpse and it turned out to belong to Father Elie Makdessi whose face was disfigured and hands tied. The body was later transferred to the Beit Chabab Hospital.

The monk’s SEAT IBIZA was never found, nor were his ID and cellphone.

The 50-year-old monk whose death was caused by asphyxiation, had been recently appointed as head of the department of archives at the Secretariat of the Lebanese Maronite Order in Kaslik.
