Geagea: Hezbollah involving Lebanon in regional conflicts

Chief of the LF Samir Geagea considered that the death of "Abu Abbas", a leader in Hezbollah, and other partisan elements in Syria reflects negatively on Lebanon pointing out that their death in Syria will cause serious consequences especially on the Shi'ite community.

After meeting the American Ambassador to Lebanon Mora Conelly, Geagea mentioned that Hezbollah's action isn't related to resistance and it puts Hezbollah in the rank of oppressors; it also contradicts the government's policy of self-distancing.

Geagea noted that this incident refutes March 8 charges against that of March 14 by "contributing in moving ammunition and weapons to Syria and Hezbollah involving Lebanon in regional conflicts."

"Hezbollah is ready to interfere if any confrontation took place between Israel and Iran or Iran and the US in the future", he added.

Geagea praised the stance of the Turkish government after Syrian mortar shells crashed on its territory leaving 5 dead as opposed to that of Lebanon "in the face of constant security breaches."

He also stressed the importance of maintaining the constitutional deadlines especially in the context of respecting the elections' schedule.

For he part, Conelly stated her shared concern  with Geagea over the destabilizing actions of Syria in Lebanon in a statement released by the US embassy in Lebanon.

"As the UN Security Council said in its statement yesterday, the Syrian regime must fully respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its neighbors.

The United States remains gravely concerned about Syria’s continued shelling of and incursions into Lebanon’s border region.

The responsibility for the violence in Syria and the violence that threatens to spill over from Syria falls squarely on the Assad regime.

The United States calls on all parties to work together to insulate Lebanon from the effects of the violence in Syria resulting from the Asad regime’s brutal crackdown on the Syrian people," she said.

Conelly also condemned "in the strongest terms" any attempt to use assassination as a political tool.

"Lebanon must close the chapter of its past and bring an end to impunity for political assassinations and other politically motivated violence," she added.

The issue of the parliamentary election was also discussed, with Conelly relaying the United State's support towards the implementation of  an electoral law "that would pave the way for free, fair and transparent elections."

"We also encourage Lebanon to uphold its democratic and constitutional principles and hold elections on time."
