Jumblatt warns of “falling into the Syrian trap”

National Struggle Front leader MP Walid Jumblatt considered the assassination of Information Branch General Wissam Hassan “a strike against a Lebanese national symbol,” for all efforts deployed by the latter in unraveling plots aimed at destabilizing and violating Lebanon’s sovereignty.

Through his party’s weekly published newspaper Al-Anbaa, Jumblatt called on Lebanese political factions to steer afar from throwing political accusation, adding that it only leads the country towards a trap plotted by the Syrian regime aimed at diverting attention away from the crisis in Damascus."

"The rhetoric which called for the resignation of the government may be understandable given the circumstances,”  he said, adding however that the speech delivered by the Lebanese President during Al-Hassan’s honorary ceremony confirms the link between the assassination of the security official and former Minister Michel Samaha and Syrian General Ali Mamlouk’s plot.”

In his concluding statement Jumblatt said that aggressions towards the government are uncalled for, adding that the cabinet’s downfall will place Lebanon in a risky situation; a desire of the Syrian regime, he said.
