United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed on Friday a video message to Lebanese people, as he prepares to visit Beirut this week.

He stressed that “Lebanese are known for their generosity, resourcefulness and hospitality, qualities that he personally touched during several visits to Lebanon,” expressing his concern about the plights they are currently facing.

Guterres also pointed out that “the horrific Beirut Port blast has claimed dear lives,” stating that “two children of UN staff members were among the youngest victims of the explosion.”

“I know that the Lebanese want answers to their questions, and I hear your demands for truth and justice, the accumulated social, economic and political crises are exacerbating your suffering, in addition to COVID-19 pandemic,” he indicated.

“I am coming to Lebanon with one simple message: The United Nations stands with Lebanese people,” Guterres said, adding “from our political teams and peacekeepers to humanitarian and development workers, the entire UN family is focused on supporting Lebanon and its people.”

He made it clear that during his visit, he would meet with various Lebanese leaders “in order to discuss the best ways to provide Lebanese with support to overcome the crises and promote peace, stability, justice, development and human rights.”

He then highlighted “the fundamental importance of the upcoming elections.”
