23 annual commemorations of Pr. Rene Mouawad’s assassination

Family members of late Pr. Rene Mouawad, dignitaries and Lebanese officials gathered Friday evening to observe the 23rd annual commemorative  service held in memory of the assassinated Lebanese president.

During the ceremony Michel Mouwad, the late president’s son, delivered a speech saying: “Each year the number of assassinations increase, but we refuse to surrender Lebanon to the ‘enemies of peace’.”

Mouawad added that there are 4 suspects accused by the STL for involvement in the assassination case of late PM Rafic Hariri, expressing awe at how some parties state that this court is controlled by Israel and the US.

Mouwad also commented on the Arab Spring and announced his support to revolutions against dictatorships.

He then tackled the issue of parliamentary elections describing them as a battle to achieve Lebanon’s sovereignty, stressing that Lebanon cannot rise without its Shiite community.

Mouwad addressed as well his fellow partners in March 14 and said: “Our goals are justified but our performance is not up to par.”

Rene Moawad was the 13th Lebanese President. He was elected on November 5th 1989 after a long bloody civil war with parties conceding on him as a man of moderation.

Seventeen days later, as he was returning from Lebanon's Independence Day celebrations on November 22, 1989, a 250 kg car bomb was detonated next to Moawad's motorcade in West Beirut, killing him and 23 others.

No credible investigation into the murder has ever been carried out.
