Patriarch Rai: Officials have no right to refuse hands outstretched to help the country
Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai expressed optimism on Sunday that the forthcoming parliamentary elections would produce free lawmakers who have the spirit of dialogue and who believe in it.

Rai’s comments were made during his Sunday sermon in Bkerki whereby he called on all Lebanese people to participate in the polls, noting that it is a “democratic entitlement to strengthen the system, and to exercise the people’s right to express their opinion and for accountability.”

As for former Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s recent decision to suspend his political work, Rai voiced hopes that Sunnites would participate in the polls with all their national forces, figures and dignitaries.

Patriarch Rai further emphasized that it is the state's responsibility to make bold and correct decisions, as well as to respond effectively to every meritorious effort to save the country from collapse and set it on the path to true salvation.

He also stressed that officials have no right to refuse the hands outstretched to help the country, to obscure or conceal facts, to cover up the plurality of weapons, to justify abuses and practices, and to evade giving answers to basic issues.
