REPORT: Candidates of HIC elections win uncontested

The Higher Islamic Council elections did not take place on Sunday in Tripoli due to lack of quorum.

As well, the elections was postponed in the Bekaa region due to lack of quorum, following the withdrawal of 4 members of the electing board.

This comes after the Grand Mufti Mohammed Rashid Qabbani announced that candidates of the Higher Islamic Council elections in Akkar, Beirut, Sidon and Mount Lebanon won uncontested.                          

Mufti Qabbani asserted that the elections are "legitimate", stressing that the Shura Council gave an opinion in this regards but did not issue any decision.

The Council elects the Mufti and organizes the affairs of Dar al-Fatwa, Lebanon’s top Sunnite religious authority.

Last year, the Shura Council suspended a call for the elections after its members, who are close to former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, filed a challenge against Qabbani's call to hold the elections.

Disputes between them rose when the members extended the mandate of the council until the end of 2013 despite the objection of Mufti Qabbani, who argues that the extension is illegal and the council’s term has expired.
