Hezbollah Bloc slams government over US proposals, warns of threats to Lebanon’s sovereignty
The Loyalty to the Resistance bloc issued a statement on Thursday warning that Lebanon and the broader region are facing one of their most dangerous and sensitive phases yet, citing what it called existential threats to geography, security, economies, and people due to the ongoing Israeli offensive, backed by the U.S., Western partners, and some Arab regimes.
The bloc said that Gaza, despite its resilience and the extraordinary sacrifices of its people and resistance fighters, is enduring a genocide “unprecedented in history,” while the so-called international community remains silent, which, it argued, makes global institutions complicit in the attempt to erase the Palestinian cause.
The statement also warned that Syria is under relentless attack, threatening its social fabric and historical role. It accused Israel of working continuously to destroy Syria’s capabilities and of attempting to divide and weaken it through occupation and destabilization efforts.
Turning to Lebanon, the bloc criticized what it described as submission by some in power to foreign pressure, particularly from the United States, and accused Prime Minister Nawaf Salam of betraying the government's own commitments by endorsing the proposal of U.S. envoy Tom Barrack.
The bloc claimed this position contradicts both the ministerial statement and the president’s inaugural address.
According to the bloc, the government's swift embrace of U.S. demands constitutes a violation of Lebanon's national pact and undermines the Taif Agreement, which enshrines Lebanon’s right to self-defense.
The bloc said that attempts to target Hezbollah’s weapons serve only Israeli interests and strip Lebanon of a key source of strength, especially in light of ongoing Israeli violations of sovereignty and assassinations of Lebanese civilians and resistance members.
It also noted that various political forces, national figures, and a broad segment of Lebanese citizens have voiced strong opposition to any move to disarm the resistance amid ongoing Israeli aggression and in the absence of any credible alternative for defense.
The bloc called on the Lebanese government to reverse what it called a dangerous slide into meeting U.S. demands, warning that this would place Lebanon under American tutelage and serve Israel's interests.
It urged the government to prioritize national interests by energizing Lebanon’s diplomatic efforts to pressure Israel into complying with the ceasefire terms—terms Lebanon has already fulfilled while Israel continues to violate them.
The bloc concluded by stressing the urgent need to develop a national defense strategy to ensure Lebanon’s ability to protect its land, sovereignty, and citizens.
