REPORT: British envoy meets Lebanese officials, warns of spillover of Syrian crisis to Lebanon

                            
Minister of Middle East affair at the British foreign office Alistair Burt said on Monday during his visit to Lebanon that he discussed with officials the flow of displaced Syrians into the country, urging Hezbollah to withdraw its fighters from Syria.

In this context, Burt lauded the dissociation policy adopted by the Lebanese government, saying that it is of benefit to the country’s stability.             

Burt also urged Lebanese citizens not to send their “sons to battle in Syria”; a phenomenon which he said could contribute to a full scale spillover of the crisis into Lebanon.            

The British envoy met with Lebanese President Michel Sleiman with talks featuring high on the issue of displaced Syrians. Sleiman reportedly requested Burt’s assistance in calling for an international conference for the aforementioned issue.         

Burt also met with House Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain el-Tinneh where he called on Lebanese politicians to agree on a legal framework for the upcoming parliamentary elections.              

Bilateral relations and military cooperation between Beirut and London topped discussions between Burt and Lebanese Army commander General Jean Kahwagi.
