Three Beirut Port employees arrested over bribery and extortion scheme

Lebanon's State Security arrested three employees of the operations department at Beirut Port on charges of bribery and extortion, following an investigation coordinated with the financial public prosecutor.

According to official information, suspicions emerged after reports that some employees were pressuring customs clearance agents to pay illegal sums in exchange for facilitating their transactions. Investigators questioned several agents, some of whom confirmed they had been subjected to extortion and deliberate delays in processing paperwork unless payments were made.

Based on judicial instructions, three employees were summoned for questioning. During interrogation, they admitted to receiving money in return for expediting procedures and, in some cases, waiving port fees owed to the public treasury.

The suspects were detained and referred to the competent judiciary for further legal action, authorities said.
