MP Melhem Khalaf to LBCI: Injustice must be addressed, but sympathy should not lead to a general amnesty law

MP Melhem Khalaf told LBCI he supports lifting injustice against those who have been wronged, noting that this can be addressed through legal provisions enforced under Article 108, adding that MP Alain Aoun had previously proposed activating the article.

He stressed that Article 108 should have been activated, saying it would help address cases of injustice.

Khalaf explained that once a ruling is issued by the military court, it is possible to file a complaint before a civilian court, and that this lawsuit is what activates the waiver of personal rights. If no civil lawsuit is filed, the waiver of rights cannot take effect.

He added that applying sentence reductions requires obtaining a waiver of personal rights, describing it as the main safeguard for protecting individual rights.

He concluded by saying the situation is harsh, noting that 106 detainees have not appeared before a court in 12 years, which he described as an injustice that must be taken into account. He emphasized the need to uphold the law and conduct trials, while stressing that sympathy should not lead to the approval of a general amnesty law.
