REPORT: Qortbawi attends the 14th annual commemoration of the 'four assassinated Judges'

             
The judicial body commemorated today (Friday) the 14th anniversary of the assassination of four judges who were killed after assailants using machine-guns broke into an open court in Sidon, south Lebanon in 1999 and shot at them.            

The Judicial body laid a wreath at a statue built for their memory--namely Hassan Osman, Assem Abu Daher, Imad Chehab and Walid Harmouche--at the Justice Palace, in the presence of Caretaker Minister of Justice Shakib Qorbawi, State Prosecutor Judge Hatem Madi and other high ranking officials.          

"I stand before the statue of these martyrs to say we have failed in our duty. We know who killed you, but unfortunately we are unable to bring them to justice," Qortbawi said.             

He affirmed that he had introduced a bill that was approved by both the Cabinet and the Parliament, "to give our martyrs the title of 'martyr judge' and compensate their families.              

"This may never fill in for the loss of a husband, father, son and brother. But only demonstrates that the state never forgets its martyrs," he said.
