LAF tightens border security, cutting off Syrian refugees

The influx of Syrians into Lebanon has decreased, most notably into the northern crossing point where numbers have reached almost zero.

This decline is due to tightened security measures imposed along the Lebanese-Syrian border, mainly at the Shedra checkpoint.

Syrian refugees in Wadi Khaled, who now number 5,500, told LBCI that they are suffering from the heightened restrictions imposed on the area, adding that they are not allowed to move freely or pass through the Shedra checkpoint.

The refugees added that they are suffering from a shortage of food and aid.

The LAF stationed new outposts along the border, near unofficial crossings, in a bid to stem the flow of refugees and curb smuggling.

It was also reported that al-Aboudiya crossing on the Syrian-Lebanese border was reopened after people crossed it on Tuesday in protest of the High Relief Commission decision not to cover the medical expenses of injured Syrians who are transferred to Lebanese hospitals.

This decision, however, exempts those in critical condition.

The protesters described this decision as “inhumane”, threatening to step up their movement if the cabinet does not go back on its decision.
