Muallem: Syria will implement Arab initiative within one week

In a letter to the Arabe League Secretary General Nabil el-Araby, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said that Syria will implement most clauses included in the Arab initiative, contrary to rumors spread in some satellite channels. The letter added that Syria’s permanent envoy to the Arab league will brief the Arab League’s ministerial council on the steps taken in this regard.    

Muallem voiced surprise when hearing about the statement issued by the US State Department encouraging Arab countries to join efforts aiming at boycotting Syria on both political and economic levels. Muallem added that this call violates the Arab League’s Charter and undermines the fundamentals of common Arab endeavor. 

According to the letter, Muallem regarded the US incitement as a pretext for any future foreign interference as well as economic and political sanctions against Syria with the consent of a number of Arab countries.  

Muallem voiced hope that Araby would reply to the US statements taking into consideration the Arab League’s Charter and Arab agreements that guarantee the Arab states’ sovereignty and security of inter-Arab relations.
