UAE hopes Syria will accept observers, avoid sanctions
The United Arab Emirates still hopes Syria will accept Arab observers to protect civilians facing a government crackdown on protests, so that it can avoid sanctions ordered by the Arab League, the foreign minister said on Wednesday.        

"We are still hoping that Damascus will accept signing this protocol without conditions so that we can avert sanctions,"    

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan told journalists in Abu Dhabi.      

Arab states voted on Sunday to impose economic sanctions on Syria, in response to President Bashar al-Assad's failure to halt a violent crackdown on an eight-month uprising against his rule.          

A technical committee will meet in Doha on Saturday to discuss and announce details such as which Syrian individuals would be targeted.
