US Asst. Secretary Feltman in Lebanon, calls on Damascus to "change its ways"

U.S Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman gave a brief press conference at the Grand Serial on his first day in Lebanon on Wednesday. After a meeting with Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Feltman answered questions on Lebanon’s ties with the U.S. and the UN, as well as the situation in Syria.

Feltman reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to maintain “the strong partnership we have with Lebanon” on many levels, including business and military.

“We strongly support Lebanon’s sovereignty and independence… the U.S. is committed to funding the Lebanese military in order to protect their borders”, Feltman said.

On events in Syria, Feltman made clear that the United States is standing with the international community in calling for Damascus to change its ways.

Feltman said, “It is worth noting how strong regional and international consensus has been to find peaceful ways to get Assad and his regime to change its tactics."

The assistant secretary also commented on the Lebanese stance on Syria, stating that, “Lebanon has a tradition of working within Arab consensus. I’m sure no one in Lebanon wants to be seen as standing on the side of brutality.”

Feltman did not answer any questions regarding the recent uncovering of several CIA assets spying on Hezbollah. He mentioned that he will meet with members of March 14 as well as members of the government during his stay in Lebanon.
