Confessions by suspects in al-Maliki's assassination attempt, arrest warrant for Hashemi

The Iraqi Ministry of Interior aired the confessions of the suspects accused of being behind the attempt to assassinate Iraqi PM Nuri al-Maliki.

One of the suspects confessed of having carried out assassinations in Iraq, commissioned by the Iraqi Vice-President Tareq al-Hashemi through his secretary.

The Iraqi judiciary issued an arrest warrant for Hashemi, a senior security official said on Monday, after the government obtained confessions linking him to what the official described as terrorist activities.

Interior Ministry spokesman, Major General Adel Daham, told a news conference that confessions by suspects identified as Hashemi's bodyguards linked the vice president to suspected killings and attacks.

The arrest warrant was signed by five judges, Daham added.
