Syrian forces continue to raid houses in Hama, Attorney General resigns

Residents of Hama said security police and state militiamen, known as “shabbiha”, raided houses overnight in the al-Sabouniya and al-Marabet districts. The raids come after troops backed by tanks arrested dozens in two other neighborhoods of the city the previous night.

Hama’s Attorney General Adnan Bakkour, who was recently kidnapped, announced his resignation on YouTube in protest of the violent suppression of street demonstrations.

The city’s governor was quoted in Syrian SANA news as saying that Bakkour’s kidnappers forced him to tell lies about completely false practices that satellite news networks were trying to promote in order to mislead the public opinion in light of the media campaign against Syria.

“These lies about false practices are fabrications hatched by armed terrorist groups who kidnapped Bakkour”, another official said.

Attorney General Adnan Bakkour was kidnapped en route to Hama Justice Palace with his driver Bahaa al-Yousef and companion Muhammad Sadrawi.

Five months of protests have failed to unseat President Bashar al-Assad, who inherited power from his father and retains the loyalty of the core of his armed forces comprised mostly of members of the Alawite minority, the same sect as the president.
