Arab league mulls freezing Syria’s membership

Asharq al Awsat daily quoted well-informed sources as saying that the Arab League is mulling freezing Syria’s membership should the crackdown on protests continue.

The sources added that the Council of the Arab league at the ministerial level will discuss during its ordinary session next Tuesday tough resolutions against the Syrian regime, such as freezing its membership if it disavows the Arab initiative.

"The visit of Arab League Chief Nabil el-Arabi to Damascus was delayed in a sign of Syrian unease with el-Arabi’s recent talks with opposition leaders in Cairo”, the sources said.

Diplomatic sources told the daily that “el-Arabi’s was going to visit Syrian President Bashar Assad to urge him to halt violence against protesters, and to suggest a reform plan to be carried out within a reasonable timetable to restore stability in Syria”.
