Israeli embassy focus of Jordanian protest

Reports from eyewitnesses via social media indicated a significantly sized protest in front of the Israeli embassy in the capital city of Jordan late Thursday night.

Twitter users in Amman began reporting a gathering of up to 1,000 demonstrators in front of the Israeli embassy that had been evacuated 24 hours before protests began; AFP reported protestor numbers closer to 200.

Some eyewitnesses noted that the very young crowd, most participants under 25, was made up of “primarily socialists” and that “Islamists are an obvious minority here. Some are even snickering at [socialist protestors]”. Minutes into the protest however, the entire crowd began chanting “unite the front” .

Chants during the protest ranged from “no Israeli embassy on Jordanian soil” to “the people want the dissolution of the Wadi Araba Treaty”. Several reports indicated that there was a significant police presence but no serious clashes with protestors. AFP put the number of security forces at 1,500.
