Imprisoned Syrian businessman questioned about bribe case
Anti-corruption prosecutors have questioned a Syrian businessman imprisoned for the abduction of three Romanian journalists about bribes demanded by another Syrian to secure his release.

Omar Hayssam is serving a 20-year sentence for the kidnapping of three journalists who were freed in 2005 after 55 days captivity in Iraq.

Hayssam was sentenced in absentia in 2007, and captured in Syria by Romanian authorities in 2013.

Hayssam was questioned Wednesday about 2 million euros bribes demanded by Syrian doctor Mohamad Yassin, who allegedly said he could pay off Romanian judges to get Hayssam released early. Yassin was arrested on April 2.

Hayssam fled to Syria from Romania in 2006. The chiefs of the intelligence services and the general prosecutor subsequently resigned amid allegations that they had facilitated his flight.
