REPORT: Czech Foreign Minister says fate of 5 nationals reported missing in Lebanon “still unclear”

Czech Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek said on Tuesday that the fate of five Czechs who went missing in the Lebanese town of Kefraya, Western Bekaa, remains unclear, noting that they may have been kidnapped.

Following a meeting held by his ministry’s crisis cell, Zaoralek said there was no information about their whereabouts and no contacts have been made since their disappearance.

He refused to elaborate further on their case and the reason behind their visit to Lebanon.

On Saturday (July 18), a police official said authorities were searching for five Czech nationals and their Lebanese driver who was identified as Saeb Taan -who went missing in eastern Lebanon.

The official said their vehicle was found a few hundred meters away from a Lebanese army checkpoint in the town of Kefraya.

A suitcase found in the car contained their passports and some money in Lebanese Lira and Euros.

The official said it was too early to say whether they may have been abducted.

Kidnapping for ransom cases have been on the rise lately, particularly in eastern Lebanon, which is close to the border with Syria.
