REPORT: 9 Palestinians drown after boat sinks shortly after leaving Tripoli Port

The state-run National News Agency reported on Wednesday that nine people were killed when a boat, which left from Lebanon's northern port of Tripoli carrying Palestinian migrants, sank in Turkey's territorial waters.

The agency added that one of the survivors said the boat was carrying 40 Palestinians from the Yarmuk Syrian camps in Damascus, who had temporarily taken refuge in northern Lebanon.

The boat departed from the Port of Tripoli on Monday and sank shortly after reaching Turkey's territorial waters due to overloading, the survivor said.

“The Turkish coast guard assisted other survivors and took them to nearby hospitals,” he explained.

It was not clear if the destination of the migrants was Turkey.

The United Nations refugee agency has said that in the last week alone, 20,843 migrants arrived in Greece, which has witnessed around 160,000 migrants land on its territories since January.
