China, on suspected N. Korea missile launch, urges peace and stability on Peninsula

China's foreign ministry on Monday (January 17) called for relevant parties to focus on the overarching picture of peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula after the Japan Coast Guard reported a suspected ballistic missile launch from North Korea.

North Korea fired two suspected short-range ballistic missiles (SRBM) on Monday from an airport in its capital city of Pyongyang, South Korea's military reported, the fourth test this month to demonstrate its expanding missile arsenal.

China hopes that relevant parties jointly promote the political resolution of Korean peninsula issues, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told journalists at a regular briefing in Beijing.

Nuclear-armed North Korea had already conducted three other missile tests in less than two weeks before Monday, an unusually rapid series of launches. It said two of them involved single "hypersonic missiles" capable of high speed and maneuvering after launch, while a test on Friday (January 14) involved a pair of short-range ballistic missiles fired from train cars.
