This is not a scene from a science-fiction movie, but a real giant hole of fire in the heart of the Karakum Desert.
It all started 40 years ago when geologists were searching for oil in the Karakum Desert. They began drilling, but the land could not support the weight of their equipment since it was a pocket of natural gas. The site collapsed shortly after, creating this pit of flames which has been burning for the last 40 years.
Locals call it ‘The Door to Hell’, and it attracts countless tourists each year.
