Peru seizes 11 tonnes of illegal shark meat
Authorities in Peru on Wednesday (September 23) seized 11 tonnes of shark meat that was due to be shipped from the Andean nation.

Customs officials seized the shark meat after the cargo was discovered using isothermal cameras in the city of Tumbes.

With a kilo of shark meat fetching up to $900 U.S., the black market trade for the fish is lucrative.

Sharks are a protected species in many parts of the world, but according to the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization, the market for shark meat has increased more than 40% from 2000 to 2010.
