REPORT: Mikati says will launch initiative to rescue Lebanon

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati stressed on Thursday the need to form a new government the soonest possible, noting that he will soon be launching an initiative to rescue Lebanon, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Mikati also said during a press conference held in the northern city of Tripoli that the Lebanese media has been always a "beacon" in the Arab world, adding that he is adamant on protecting freedoms of expression but "some red lines should never be crossed".

In a question directed at Mikati over the media campaign that had recently targeted him, he said he will take legal and judicial procedures in this regard.

This comes after Mikati received at his residence in Tripoli popular crowds from north Lebanon expressing solidarity with him in the face of a media slander campaign launched by al-Diyar Newspaper’s Editor-in-chief Charles Ayoub.

Mikati addressed the delegations stressing that national interest is among his priorities as he seeks to restore calm across the country.

Mikati is expected to receive further delegations and supporters throughout the day.

On Sunday 8th of September, al-Diyar Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Charles Ayoub published articles in his newspaper whereby he launched accusations and insults against caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

Consequently, caretaker Information Minister Walid Daouq sent on Monday September 9, letters to the Head of the Press Syndicate Mohammed al-Baalbaki and the head of the Lebanese Journalists Union Elias Aoun, calling on them to take the necessary legal measures against Ayoub, stressing that “the content of Ayoub’s article goes beyond freedom of expression, reaching the lowest levels of journalism and even yellow press”.
