REPORT: The Hashtag sign, rooted in 14th century Europe

Chris Messina is widely credited for inventing the hashtag in August 2007, a convention that’s now used to link conversations across all sorts of media.

However, few know that the story of the hashtag started sometime during the fourteenth century, with the introduction of the Latin abbreviation “lb,” for the Roman term libra pondo, or “pound weight.”

This report will shed light on the ancient roots of the hashtag symbol.
