REPORT: Iranian who survived execution to be hanged again

A 37-year-old Iranian citizen identified as Alireza M, was found guilty on charges of drug trafficking.

On the 9th of October, Alireza was hanged for 12 minutes at the Bojnord prison in the country's northeast; however, the next day he was found breathing and was reportedly transported to the hospital.

An Iranian official noted that the mentioned citizen will be executed again once he recovers.

In this regard, the director of Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa Program Philip Luther said that hanging Alireza a second time after having gone through the whole ordeal already once underlines the cruelty and inhumanity of the death penalty.

Luther added that Iranian authorities should halt Alireza’s execution and issue a moratorium on all others.

Amnesty International says Iran has executed 508 people this year, mostly for drug offences.
