REPORT: Executive council for Teachers Syndicate announces strike on Wednesday

The executive council for the Lebanese Teachers Syndicate has announced a strike on Wednesday in the private schools, upon the call of the Union Coordination Committee (UCC).          

The council also urged teachers to partake in Wednesday's sit-in to be held in Beirut outside the Parliament at 11 am.       

"The series of ranks and salaries is at stake," the council said.

This comes after the Union Coordination Committee called for a general strike on Wednesday and mass rallies outside the Lebanese Parliament starting 11 am.

Following its meeting, the UCC said the Joint Parliamentary Committees insist on linking the new wage scale to revenues, dubbing it unconstitutional.

"Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh and the Economic Committees are intimidating the people," the UCC said.

It also threatened to stage an open-ended strike and boycott official state exams.

On Monday, the Union Coordinating Committee said it will grant the Joint Parliamentary Committees until Tuesday morning to refer the series of ranks and salaries to Parliament on Thursday; or otherwise announce escalatory measures.

The UCC held a demonstration simultaneously with the session held by the said committees, stressing that it rejects imposing taxes on the people; instead it called on imposing the taxes on the owners of companies and economic bodies.

The Union Coordinating Committee had launched its open ended strike on February 19th 2013 after making repeated called on then Prime Minister Mikati to validate the new salary scale and consequently refer it to Parliament for ratification.
