REPORT: Parliament amends law on child abuse

Amid the deep discussions conducted by the Parliament concerning the funding of the series of ranks and salaries, the law pertaining to child abuse was passed silently.

On Wednesday, the parliament voted on the elimination of article 186 of the Penal Code, and which authorizes disciplinary measures taken by fathers and teachers against children.

However, Speaker Nabih Berri “surprisingly” called for voting on the same article again, due to a misinterpretation of the text, as he said, and due to the objection voiced by a number of religious figures over the elimination of the article.

Accordingly, the said article was amended and now authorizes “nonviolent disciplinary measures practiced by fathers and mothers against their children on condition that they do not leave traces.”
