REPORT: President Assad: Sacrifice of martyrs' families cherished by all Syrians
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received on Tuesday the families of soldiers who had died in the line of duty, although they had specifically been pardoned from their military obligation by law for being their families' only sons.

President Assad assured that the efforts of the martyrs and their families are appreciated by the Syrian people, stressing that Syria would not have withstood the crisis had it not been for their sacrifice.

Article 40 of the 1973 Constitution of Syria states that "the military service is compulsory and regulated by law."

Under the Service of the Flag Law of 1953, all Syrian males, with the exception of Jews, must serve in the military. Exemptions are provided for males who are the only son in the family, have health problems, and are students.
