REPORT: Parliamentary committee urges cabinet to declare a state of water emergency

The parliamentary committee of Public Works, Transport and Water has decided to deal with the drought crisis as an environmental catastrophe, urging the government to declare a state of water emergency.

The committee's decision was made on Wednesday as it held a session to tackle the means of addressing the risks of the expected water scarcity.

In this context, the committee highlighted the need to ration water consumption by ceasing the irrigation of seasonal crops in return for compensations, and dedicating the available water for domestic use.

Among the committee's recommendations, the public water institutions shall take control of privately owned wells and distribute water to households.

The committee also suggested to import water from Turkey by using Spragg Bags, huge plastic balloons that are shipped through the ocean.

Lebanon is likely to face a water crisis following a record dry winter.
