REPORT: Trial of fugitive cleric Assir postponed until August 26

The permanent military court adjourned on Tuesday the trial of fugitive hard-line cleric Ahmad Assir and 56 others accused, 45 of whom were detained in the Abra clashes.

The trial was postponed until the 26th of August.

Salafist cleric Ahmad Assir is still on the run following deadly clashes with the Lebanese Armed Forces in the southern city of Sidon on June 2013.

Indictments calling for the death penalty were issued in February against him and 56 of his supporters.

The clashes broke out after Assir's supporters opened fire at a Lebanese Armed Forces checkpoint near the cleric's headquarters in Abra, a suburb of Sidon.

The fierce attack left around 18 soldiers and more than 20 gunmen dead.
